The United Kingdom Parliament.

Parliament seems to have gone on the net in a big way very recently - both the Commons and the Lords now have their own home pages, and it's possible to keep closer track on what your MP's have been doing (though not, I suspect, who's been paying them to ask questions!). Most of the information seems to date from the beginning of the 1996/97 session (23rd October 1996), so there's not a great deal of records available on-line yet, but the search engine seems to work pretty well, so you can find speeches by the people you're interested in. The Hansard pages seem to be formatted very much like the printed document.

Australia

Note that the records of debates of the Australian Federal Parliament and the New South Wales state Parliament are held in Adobe PDF format files - you will need to download the Adobe Acrobat version 3 reader from one of the links on the home pages before you can read the Hansard records (if you don't already have it), and the records for particular days are very large files which may take 5 minutes or more to download.

A reading of some of the minutes of the Canadian provincial legislative assemblies would seem to indicate that if you're visiting their public galleries you're quite likely to be intoduced to the House by the MLA who gave you a ticket, and get your name in Hansard!

India

As I'm the treasurer of my local ward branch of the Labour Party, I'll have to put them first on the list!

Regional U.K. Political Parties.

• The Alliance Party of Northern Ireland are the largest non-aligned party in N.I.
• Plaid Cymru's relaunched site is here..
• The Scottish Conservative Party are an endangered species.
• The Scottish Liberal Democrats are in effect a completely separate party from the federal party.
• The Scottish National Party is Scotland's second largest party, after Labour.
• Sinn Féin is at last engaging in active peaceful politics and is now the larger of the Nationalist parties...
• taking over from the Social Democratic and Labour Party.
• The Democratic Unionist Party is the largest Unionist Party in Northern Ireland, and
• the Ulster Unionist Party isn't.

Fringe Parties and Groups.

• Index page of the Monster Raving Loony Party, a wonderfully eccentric bunch who expel any candidate from membership of the party if he manages to save his deposit at an election (i.e. gets at least 5% of the votes!). This is a new site, created since the demise of the party's founder, the great Screaming Lord Sutch.
• The Green Party has surprisingly small support, given all its campaigns.
• The Natural Law Party is now defunct, but they've archived their website so you can examine their beliefs. They believed society's ills are all caused by neglecting Natural Law - yes, these are the people who indulged in a little yogic flying. How did these people manage to scrape together the £1000 deposit they lost in each of around 600 constituencies at the 1997 General Election?
